Manage Diabetes with Aquatic Therapy Treatment

Diabetes

According to reports by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), about 7 percent of the population in the United States – about 20.8 million adults and children – have diabetes.  This disease, which is associated with abnormal blood glucose (blood sugar) levels, is linked to a range of health problems including hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, and celiac disease.   However, if you have been diagnosed with diabetes, aquatic exercise can help you manage your symptoms and enjoy the numerous other health benefits of water-based exercise.

Benefits of Aquatic Exercise – Managing Diabetes

The ADA reports that physical activity can help control your blood cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood glucose.  It can also reduce your risk of stroke and heart disease, relieve stress, and strengthen your bones, heart, and cardiovascular system.  Moreover, regular exercise keeps the joints flexible, helps insulin work well, and improves blood circulation.

Exercise and Diabetes – What the Experts Say
According to a recent study by S. Lee*, by strengthening the heart and lungs, you can lower your risk of developing diabetes and related complications by an astounding 44 percent.  Lee’s study involved 297 men who were studied at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas and Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.  The results of the study were telling:  men with healthy hearts and lungs were less likely to develop diabetes or related conditions, even if they were overweight.  The also had lower blood pressure, lower triglycerides, and higher HDL, the “good” cholesterol.
